Free Useful Thai Vocabularies and Phrases with PDF Download

I spent hours collecting top verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, numbers, word phrases, past, present and future tenses, with help from my Thai teacher and Thai friends.

As you can imagine, it was a lot of work. With it partly complete, I decided to share my efforts here.

For easy viewing, the pdf is designed in the landscape format. Depending on what you want to study, you can fold the pages to see either the English with Thai script, or the English with transliteration. The page numbers are there to assist those following along with Myke’s book.

Due to the size of the project, only the phrases and vocabulary listed in The Quick and Dirty Guide to Learning Languages Fast are included in the list. More Thai vocabulary and phrases, some with sound, will come later.

Everyday Thai Words to Learn First

Start with these. They cover greetings, shopping, food and directions, and each is spelled the way the Royal Society dictionary lists it. Check the pronunciation column for the tone, because Thai changes meaning with pitch.

Two of these words are enough to shop. ราคาเท่าไร (raa-kaa tâo-rai) asks how much something costs. Then ถูก or แพง tells the seller what you think of the answer.

To sound polite, end a sentence with ครับ (kráp) if you’re a man or ค่ะ (kâ) if you’re a woman. Our guide to please, thank you and excuse me in Thai shows these words in a real exchange.

Thai Words for the Pharmacy and Hospital

A Thai pharmacy visit usually needs just a body part and one word for pain. Learn these before you need them, because nobody wants to look them up mid-headache.

ThaiPronunciationMeaning
ยาyaamedicine
ปวดbpùuatto ache, to hurt
ปวดหัวbpùuat hŭaheadache
ปวดฟันbpùuat fantoothache
โรงพยาบาลrohng-pá-yaa-baanhospital

ปวด is a building block. Put the body part after it and you’ve got the symptom, as in ปวดหัว and ปวดฟัน. Our Thai pharmacy conversation guide has the full dialogue, including what the pharmacist is likely to ask back.

How to Study From the PDF

The PDF is landscape, so you can fold each page and see the English with either Thai script or transliteration. Start on the transliteration side and say each word out loud. Switch to the script side once the sounds feel familiar.

Thai has five tones (mid, low, falling, high and rising), and the same syllable means different things in each. Learn every word as sound plus tone from the start, so you don’t have to relearn it later. Reading the script helps too. Our guide to learning the Thai alphabet is the place to begin.

Words stick when you use them. Try your new vocabulary when you’re ordering food in Thai or asking for directions in Thai. One or two words are often enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Thai vocabulary PDF free?

Yes. You can download both the A4 and the Letter version from this page. Each file is about 436 kb.

What is in the Thai vocabulary PDF?

It has the phrases and vocabulary listed in The Quick and Dirty Guide to Learning Languages Fast, with that book’s page numbers. Fold a page to see the English with Thai script, or the English with transliteration.

Which PDF should I download, A4 or Letter?

Pick the paper size your printer uses. A4 is the standard in Thailand and most of the world. Letter is the standard in the United States and Canada.

Does the PDF have audio?

No. The PDF doesn’t have audio, though we plan to add more vocabulary and phrases with sound later. For spoken examples now, use the list of 325 common Thai phrases with pronunciation and audio below.

Why does ขอโทษ mean both “excuse me” and “sorry”?

Thai uses one word for both. The Royal Society dictionary defines ขอโทษ as asking to be excused, and as a polite expression for when you feel you may have offended someone. So it works for apologising for a mistake and for squeezing past someone in a doorway.
