Living in Chidlom (Chit Lom), Bangkok: Rent, Skywalk Malls and Lumphini Park

Chidlom is the stretch around BTS Chit Lom, where a skywalk links some of Bangkok’s biggest malls, from Central Chidlom and Gaysorn to CentralWorld. Embassies line Wireless Road a short walk east. It’s the flattest, driest part of central Bangkok, and the most expensive.

Few Bangkok neighborhoods let you do so much on foot. A mall, a hospital, a park and two rail lines sit inside a 20-minute walk of most front doors. Diplomats, corporate transferees and plenty of retirees live here for exactly that.

You pay for it every month, because rents here are the highest in the city. And at rush hour, Ploenchit and Wireless Road turn into a slow river of taxis going nowhere.

This guide covers where Chidlom starts and stops, what rent costs, where to eat and drink, and who should live here. Near the end, we look at the two neighborhoods next door, Langsuan and Ploenchit, in case one of them fits you better.

Key Takeaways

  • BTS Chit Lom is Chidlom’s station, on the Sukhumvit Line. Siam is one stop west and Phloen Chit one stop east.
  • Rents are the highest in Bangkok: roughly THB35,000 to THB70,000 a month for a modern one-bedroom.
  • A skywalk links BTS Chit Lom to Central Chidlom, Gaysorn and CentralWorld, so rainy-season shopping never touches the street.
  • Flood risk is very low. The area stayed dry in both of Bangkok’s big floods, in 2011 and 2026.
  • Lumphini Park is at the far end of Langsuan Road, south of Chit Lom, and Bumrungrad is about 1.3 km away.
  • Street food is thin and there’s no fresh market, so you’ll eat at malls and on Soi Langsuan.
  • It suits high-budget expats, diplomats and retirees who want a walkable center. Families and nomads face a steep rent bill.
  • Next door, Langsuan is the quieter lane toward the park and Ploenchit is the embassy and office end. Both share Chidlom’s malls and hospitals.

Location

Map of Chidlom, Langsuan and Ploenchit in Bangkok, with BTS and MRT stations, main roads, supermarkets, hospitals, St. Andrews Sathorn and Lumphini Park
Chidlom at a glance, with Langsuan and Ploenchit next door. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Chidlom centers on BTS Chit Lom, where Chidlom Road meets Ploenchit Road, between Ratchaprasong in the west and Langsuan Road in the east.

Langsuan and Ploenchit sit right next door, between Chidlom, Wireless Road and Lumphini Park, and most of this guide applies to them too. We compare the three near the end.

  • Thai name: ชิดลม (Chidlom)
  • Pronunciation: chit-LOM
  • Main roads: Ploenchit Road, Chidlom Road and Ratchadamri Road
  • Stations: BTS Chit Lom, with BTS Ratchadamri and BTS Phloen Chit close by
  • District: Pathum Wan

Big roads mark most of the edges of the wider area.

  • West: Ratchaprasong intersection, with CentralWorld and the Erawan Shrine, then Siam beyond.
  • North: the Pratunam side of Phetchaburi Road.
  • South: Lumphini Park and Rama IV Road, with Silom and Sathorn past them.
  • East: Sukhumvit Soi 1 and the start of Sukhumvit Road, where the Asok and Nana guide picks up.

BTS Chit Lom is the center of daily life. Its skywalk runs west to Ratchaprasong and links straight into Central Chidlom, Gaysorn and Central Embassy, so most errands start at the station.

Pros and Cons of Living in Chidlom

Living in Chidlom gets you a flat, walkable center with Bangkok’s driest streets, and costs you the city’s highest rents. Whether that’s a fair trade comes down to your housing budget, not your taste.

Pros

  • Walkability: malls, a park, a hospital and two rail lines sit within 20 minutes on foot of most buildings.
  • Rain-proof shopping: the skywalk from BTS Chit Lom runs to Central Chidlom, Gaysorn and CentralWorld.
  • Lumphini Park: 57 hectares of green at the south end, with a running loop that fills up at dawn.
  • Flood safety: it stayed dry in both big floods, in 2011 and 2026.
  • Hospitals: Bumrungrad, Police General and King Chulalongkorn Memorial are all about 1 to 1.3 km away.
  • Connections: Siam, Silom and Asok are each about 6 to 8 minutes by train.

Cons

  • Price: rents are the highest in Bangkok, and family-sized units cost more still.
  • Traffic: Ploenchit Road and Wireless Road jam at rush hour, and taxis crawl.
  • Weekend crowds: Ratchaprasong packs out on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
  • Thin street food: few carts and no fresh market, so daily food costs run higher.
  • Small nightlife scene: hotel bars and a few speakeasies suit a quiet drink. Anything louder means a ride east to Nana.

What Daily Life Looks Like in Chidlom

Daily life in Chidlom runs on the skywalk, the park and the lunch hour, with embassy staff and office workers on weekdays and mall crowds on weekends.

Your weekday starts at Lumphini Park, where joggers circle the paths at dawn and the crows are louder than the traffic.

Then it’s breakfast at Baan Langsuan, a wooden house more than 80 years old on Soi Langsuan that opens at 7 AM (closed Mondays). After that, BTS Chit Lom and one stop to Siam with everyone else in office shoes.

Lunch is Eathai at Central Embassy, or the hawker center by Gate 5 of the park if it’s running.

Errands mean the skywalk through Central Chidlom and Gaysorn, above the stalled traffic and out of the heat.

After work, Soi Langsuan fills up. Grab groceries at Villa Market in the Velaa Sindhorn Village basement, then yakitori off the charcoal grill at Okasan, booked ahead.

The nightcap is live jazz at Firefly Bar or a Japanese whisky at Kouji Alchemist, behind a door marked only by a small bronze plaque.

Saturday starts with brunch at Hoppe, which has only a few tables, so go early. Then it’s the park again, or the Central Embassy cinema if a storm rolls in.

Avoid Ratchaprasong on a Sunday afternoon if you can. The skywalk turns into a slow shuffle of Thai families and tour groups, so do your shopping before noon.

From January to April, end Sunday at the evening concerts in Lumphini Park.

Chidlom rents and everyday costs. Rough asking-rent ranges from public listings seen in 2026; check current listings before you budget. Fares and meal prices are rough ranges.

Leases usually run 12 months. On signing, you’ll typically pay:

  • a two-month deposit
  • one month’s rent in advance

Ask what the building charges per unit for electricity and water, and whether the common-area fee is included. Our Bangkok cost of living guide has the wider picture.

Accommodation in Chidlom

Housing in Chidlom means condos and serviced apartments, from compact studios in older buildings to branded towers with hotel services. Houses are rare, so your garden is Lumphini Park.

Luxury Condos

Luxury and branded two-bedroom condos in Chidlom rent for roughly THB90,000 to THB180,000 a month. The biggest pocket runs along Langsuan, Ruamrudee and Wireless Road, next door to embassies and five-star hotels.

Buying instead? Our condo buying guide covers prices and foreign-ownership rules.

Modern but Smaller Condos

A modern one-bedroom of 40 to 60 square meters in Chidlom rents for roughly THB35,000 to THB70,000 a month. It comes furnished, with a gym and pool, usually five to ten minutes on foot from a station.

Time that walk before you sign. The Ploenchit side is close to two stations, but a unit deep in a Langsuan lane can mean 10 sweaty minutes each way.

Bigger, Older, Affordable Condos

Older condos in Chidlom give you 90 to 130 square meters for roughly THB45,000 to THB90,000 a month. That’s more space per baht than the new towers.

You pay for the space in age. Lifts, plumbing and furniture can look tired, and the pool and gym are plainer. Plenty of retirees and long-stay diplomats happily take that trade.

Serviced Apartments

Serviced apartments in Chidlom rent for roughly THB50,000 to THB100,000 a month for a one-bedroom, often with cleaning and some bills included. Compare the total monthly cost with a condo, not the rent alone.

They suit transferees and newcomers who want a soft landing. Our guide to serviced apartments in Bangkok explains what’s usually included, and the short-term rental guide covers month-to-month options.

Townhouses and Gated Communities

Houses and townhouses are rare in Chidlom and cost far more than condos. Almost everyone here lives in a tower.

If you want a garden, our Bangkok houses guide covers where to look, and the Bang Na guide shows what a house costs further out.

Budget Options

Budget living barely exists in Chidlom. The cheapest older studios start around THB18,000 a month, more than a one-bedroom in On Nut or Ratchada.

If rent is the issue, Phra Khanong is cheaper on the same BTS line. Before signing anything, read what a rental contract should say.

Dining Out in Chidlom

Dining in Chidlom means mall food halls at lunch and Soi Langsuan at night, where more than 40 small restaurants line the street. On a weekend night, book ahead or expect to wait.

A plated dish at a French-style cafe near Ploenchit
A French-style cafe near Ploenchit. On weekdays, the office towers around Chit Lom and Ploenchit keep lunch places like this busy.

Street Food

Street food in Chidlom is thin, because the malls and hotels have squeezed out most carts. The city’s answer is the Hawker Centre Suan Lumphini on Ratchadamri Road, beside Gate 5 of Lumphini Park.

Bangkok’s city government soft-opened it on 10 April 2026, planned for more than 100 vendors on rotating morning and evening shifts. Park favorites such as Khao Kha Moo Ko Lan, the stewed pork leg on rice, were on the line-up.

We could confirm only the soft opening, so check it’s running before you build lunch around it. Walk from BTS Sala Daeng Exit 6 or MRT Lumphini Exit 1.

On a sweltering afternoon the food halls win. Central Embassy has one called Eathai, and the Erawan Bangkok mall lists restaurants on its lower levels.

Mid-range meals in Chidlom run about THB600 to THB1,200 a head, and most of the best-known spots sit a few minutes’ walk from Chit Lom, on Soi Langsuan or in Velaa Sindhorn Village.

  • Baan Langsuan: Thai comfort food in a wooden house more than 80 years old at 39/2 Soi Langsuan. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 7 AM to 5 PM, and busy at weekends.
  • Hoppe Coffee House: a small café-restaurant on the ground floor of Velaa Sindhorn Village, known for roast chicken and beef stew. Open 10 AM to 10 PM.
  • Okasan: a Japanese izakaya on Soi Langsuan with yakitori and charcoal grills. Dinner only from 5 PM, roughly THB600 to THB1,200 a head, and you need to book.
  • Bisou: a Michelin-listed French dinner spot at 9 Soi Langsuan, open 5:30 PM to midnight.
  • The Smoking Pug: American barbecue at 105 Langsuan Road, run by a US couple. It’s packed most nights, so book.
  • Flourish: the main restaurant at Sindhorn Kempinski, with a big weekend breakfast buffet and a garden view.
  • Avant: a 10-seat French-Japanese tasting counter on the 30th floor of Kimpton Maa-Lai.

Our picks for the best restaurants in Bangkok go further.

Drinking in Chidlom

Nights out in Chidlom happen in hotel bars and hidden speakeasies, where you’re more likely to hear live jazz than a DJ. There are far fewer bars than in Asok or Thong Lo.

  • Firefly Bar: a cocktail lounge at Sindhorn Kempinski with dark wood, live jazz and a small terrace. Open daily, 5 PM to 1 AM, smart casual.
  • Kouji Alchemist: a Japanese speakeasy in the Velaa Sindhorn Village basement, marked only by a small bronze plaque. Open daily, 5 PM to midnight.
  • Okasan: the izakaya doubles as a late bar until 1 AM, with karaoke rooms upstairs.

Want something louder? The bars of Sukhumvit Soi 4 are one BTS stop east of Phloen Chit, and our Asok and Nana guide covers them.

Groceries in Chidlom

Groceries in Chidlom come from supermarkets inside malls, with imported food everywhere and no fresh market to speak of.

Fresh Markets

There’s no fresh market in Chidlom. Residents lean on supermarkets and delivery apps, and our grocery delivery guide compares the services.

Supermarkets

Villa Market, Tops and Big C are the main supermarkets in Chidlom, and the mall food halls fill in the rest.

  • Villa Market: the imported-food specialist, with a branch in the basement of Velaa Sindhorn Village on Langsuan Road.
  • Tops Food Hall: the premium supermarket inside Central Chidlom, with a wine cellar, a butcher and a food court.
  • Big C Ratchadamri: the cheaper option, on the western edge near CentralWorld.

Big C is the bulk-buy run and Villa Market the imported-treat run. Hours vary by branch, so check before a late trip.

Chidlom’s Malls and Lumphini Park

The BTS skywalk along Ploenchit Road and Ratchaprasong links the city’s priciest malls, and Lumphini Park sits at the end of Langsuan Road. Between them, they explain the rents.

Central Chidlom, Central Embassy and Gaysorn

Central Chidlom, Central Embassy and Gaysorn Village are three malls you can reach from BTS Chit Lom without leaving the air-conditioning, and the skywalk carries on to CentralWorld.

  • Central Chidlom: Central Group’s flagship department store, opened in 1973 and linked by skybridge to BTS Chit Lom.
  • Central Embassy: opened in 2017 at 1031 Ploenchit Road, with the Park Hyatt hotel, the Eathai food hall and the Embassy Diplomat Screens cinema. It connects to both BTS Chit Lom and BTS Phloen Chit.
  • Gaysorn Village: five levels and more than 100 shops at 999 Ploenchit Road, linked by a second-floor skybridge to Chit Lom station and CentralWorld.
  • Erawan Bangkok: a smaller lifestyle mall at 494 Ploenchit Road with restaurants and several health clinics.

The skywalk earns its keep in the rainy season. When a storm hits, you can walk above the Erawan Shrine and the stalled traffic and stay dry.

The Lumphini Park Edge

Lumphini Park covers 360 rai, about 57.6 hectares, on the south edge of the area, with Witthayu Road on its east side and Ratchadamri Road on its west.

The paths total about 2.5 km and fill with runners at dawn. There’s a lake with rental boats, and around 400 Asian water monitors live here, so a lizard crossing your path is a normal Tuesday.

The 1.3 km Green Bridge links the park to Benjakitti Park across Rama IV Road.

Transportation Options for Chidlom

The BTS Sukhumvit and Silom lines, plus the MRT Blue Line at the south end, make a car unnecessary in Chidlom. Our transportation guide covers cards, passes and fares.

BTS

BTS Chit Lom and BTS Phloen Chit are on the Sukhumvit Line, and BTS Ratchadamri is on the Silom Line. Siam, where the two lines cross, is one stop west of Chit Lom.

Siam and Silom are each about 6 minutes away and Asok about 8. Single trips run roughly THB17 to THB65.

MRT

The MRT Blue Line serves the south end of the area at Lumphini station, beside the park. Sala Daeng BTS and Si Lom MRT are a short walk further south, where Ratchadamri, Rama IV and Silom roads meet.

To reach the Airport Rail Link, ride the BTS from Chit Lom to Phaya Thai, three stops north, and change there.

From Phaya Thai, the Airport Rail Link reaches Suvarnabhumi in about 27 minutes for roughly THB15 to THB45. The whole trip takes about 40 minutes, and our airport transfer guide compares the other ways.

Motorbike Taxis

Motorbike taxis in Chidlom cost about THB20 for the first kilometer, and they’re the fastest way down a long soi. Wear the helmet, and agree the price first where no rate is posted.

Taxis and Grab

Metered taxis start at about THB35, and Grab works well here. Ploenchit and Wireless Road jam at rush hour, so the train usually wins for anything under 5 km.

Buses

Buses 2, 25, 40, 48, 501, 508, 511 and 513 run along Ploenchit Road. They’re cheap, and slow in traffic. There’s no boat service in the area.

Flooding in Chidlom

Chidlom’s risk of a big flood is very low, and the area stayed dry in both of Bangkok’s big floods, in 2011 and 2026.

Streets can still flood in a heavy downpour, as Sala Daeng near the park did in a November 2025 storm, but the water usually clears within a few hours.

Our guide to Bangkok’s flood-free neighborhoods covers the wider picture.

Healthcare in Chidlom

Chidlom sits within about 1.3 km of three major hospitals, public and private, with a fourth a short ride away in Silom. It’s a big reason retirees pick the area, and our private hospitals guide compares the options.

Hospitals

  • Bumrungrad International Hospital: about 1.3 km east at 33 Sukhumvit Soi 3, accredited by Joint Commission International. Its 24-hour line handles emergencies and ambulances (1378 within Thailand), and its Expatriate Liaison Center looks after international patients. It costs more than most private hospitals.
  • BNH Hospital: a private hospital at 9/1 Convent Road in Silom, a short ride south.
  • Police General Hospital: a public hospital at 492/1 Rama I Road, about 0.9 km from the center of the area.
  • King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital: a public teaching hospital run by the Thai Red Cross, about 1.1 km away. Our guide to Chulalongkorn Hospital for foreigners covers appointments and costs.

Clinics

Walk-in care in Chidlom is easiest at the hospitals’ outpatient departments and at clinics inside malls. For something minor, try a pharmacy first. The Erawan Bangkok mall lists these clinics:

  • Entrio Clinic
  • Longa Heart Health Medical Center
  • First Fertility Erawan
  • Soma Health

Dentists

Dentists in Chidlom range from mall clinics to hospital dental centers. Our Bangkok dentist guide lists the options across the city.

Veterinarians

There’s no vet clinic in Chidlom itself. The nearest we can confirm is the Small Animal Teaching Hospital of Chulalongkorn University at 39 Henri-Dunant Road, a short ride away. Our Bangkok veterinarian guide lists 24-hour options.

International Schools in Chidlom

The best-known international schools near Chidlom are in Sathorn and on Sukhumvit, about 1.7 to 2.2 km away. Our international schools guide compares fees and curricula.

  • St. Andrews International School Sathorn: a British National Curriculum school for ages 2 to 11, about 1.7 km away.
  • Crescent International School: a British school in Sathorn that prepares students for Edexcel IGCSE and A-level exams, about 2.2 km away.
  • NIST International School: on Sukhumvit Soi 15, about 2 km east, teaching the full IB from age 3 to 18.

Most families use a school bus or a Grab, because the area has few schools of its own. That’s one more reason family-sized units here are hard to justify on price.

Parks in Chidlom

Lumphini Park, at the end of Langsuan Road, is the park for Chidlom, which gives it more green space than most central neighborhoods.

Beyond the running loop, the park has a lake, a library and a dance hall. On Sundays from January to April it hosts a Western and Thai music festival.

Other Standout Venues and Features

The Erawan Shrine and the Embassy Diplomat Screens cinema are the two landmarks residents mention most, with hotel spas and gyms filling out the rest.

  • Erawan Shrine: the Thao Maha Phrom Shrine at Ratchaprasong, built in 1956. Dance troupes hired by worshippers perform there, and you can watch from the Chit Lom walkway.
  • Embassy Diplomat Screens: the cinema at Central Embassy.
  • Park Hyatt and Sindhorn Kempinski: two five-star hotels where non-guests can book a table or a drink.
  • Fitness: hotel and condo gyms are common, and our Bangkok fitness guide covers the independent options.

There isn’t much coworking space in Chidlom. If you need a desk, our guide to serviced offices in Bangkok covers the options.

Alternatives Next Door: Langsuan and Ploenchit

If Chidlom suits you but the Ratchaprasong crowds don’t, look one street over. Langsuan and Ploenchit share Chidlom’s malls, hospitals and park, and each is a short walk or one BTS stop from Chit Lom. What changes is the feel, the nearest station and who they suit.

Langsuan

Langsuan Road runs south from Ploenchit Road, just east of Chit Lom, all the way to Lumphini Park. It’s the quieter, more residential side of the area, with condo towers, small restaurants and boutique hotels in its lanes.

Velaa Sindhorn Village stretches over 300 meters of Langsuan Road as a semi-outdoor mall, with open walkways under a canopy shaped like tree branches. Sindhorn Kempinski and Kimpton Maa-Lai are part of the same complex.

By day it’s a shaded walk between shops and cafés. After dark it’s low lighting and reservations.

  • Nearest station: BTS Chit Lom at the north end. From the park end, it’s a walk to BTS Ratchadamri or MRT Lumphini.
  • Suits: people who want Chidlom’s location without the mall crowds, and anyone who wants Lumphini Park on the doorstep.
  • Watch out for: the walk. A unit deep in a Langsuan lane can mean 10 sweaty minutes to the station, and the luxury towers here sit at the top of the rent range.

Ploenchit and Wireless Road

Ploenchit Road runs east from Chidlom to BTS Phloen Chit, where it meets Wireless Road (Witthayu in Thai) and Sukhumvit Road begins. On weekday mornings its exits empty straight into the office towers.

The United States Embassy is at 95 Wireless Road, and Phloen Chit station is ringed by hotels, office towers and more embassies. For a diplomat or a transferee, that means a short walk to work and a BTS line to everything else.

Not every embassy stayed. The old British Embassy gardens on Ploenchit Road became Central Embassy, which opened in 2017, and the British Embassy moved to a Sathorn tower. The mall kept the name.

US citizens renewing a retirement visa should see our guide to the US Embassy income affidavit.

Soi Ruamrudee, off Ploenchit Road near the station, is the residential lane on this side, with condo towers and serviced apartments next door to the embassies.

  • Nearest station: BTS Phloen Chit. Central Embassy connects to both Phloen Chit and Chit Lom.
  • Suits: diplomats, transferees and business people who want to walk to work. Bumrungrad, on Sukhumvit Soi 3, and the Nana bars are closer from this end.
  • Watch out for: traffic. Ploenchit Road and Wireless Road jam at rush hour, so you’ll lean on the BTS.

Chidlom vs. Siam vs. Asok

Chidlom suits people who want a polished, walkable base. Siam puts you in the middle of the mall and student crowd, and Asok gives you the most rail lines and nightlife.

Chidlom compared with Siam and Asok. Rough asking-rent ranges from public listings seen in 2026; check current listings before you budget.

Siam is one BTS stop west and cheaper, but louder, with Siam Square, tour groups and traffic at all hours. Chidlom feels calmer because the embassies and hotels soak up the noise.

Asok is two stops east of Phloen Chit. It costs roughly a third less, adds the MRT and puts the Airport Rail Link a stop away, but the bars share blocks with the condos. Our Asok and Nana guide covers the trade-off.

For somewhere quieter further along the line, the Phrom Phong guide covers a family-friendly stretch. Our Bangkok neighborhoods guide covers the whole city.

Should You Live in Chidlom?

Chidlom suits high-budget expats, diplomats, corporate transferees and retirees who want a walkable center, and it suits families and nomads less. If your one-bedroom budget sits under THB35,000, Siam or Asok will stretch it further.

  • Diplomats and transferees: embassies, serviced apartments and offices on Ploenchit and Wireless Road make the commute a short walk.
  • Retirees: flat streets, Lumphini Park and three hospitals within 1.3 km. See our retirement guide, and our health insurance rules for retirees before you sign a long lease.
  • Business people: offices along Ploenchit and Wireless Road, with Asok, Siam and Silom all under 10 minutes by train.
  • Families: the park and hospitals are close, but family-sized units carry the city’s highest rents, and schools are a ride away.
  • Nomads: central and well connected, but at these rents few stay long.

What’s the difference between Chidlom, Langsuan and Ploenchit?

They’re neighbors along the same stretch of Ploenchit Road. Chidlom is the mall and skywalk core around BTS Chit Lom, Langsuan is the quieter road running south to Lumphini Park, and Ploenchit is the embassy and office end around BTS Phloen Chit. All three share the same malls, hospitals and park.

Can I live in Chidlom without a car?

Yes. The skywalk, two BTS lines and motorbike taxis cover almost every trip, and Grab fills the gaps.
