Living in Khlong Toei and Rama 4: The Complete Guide

Khlong Toei is where Rama IV Road meets the even-numbered side of Sukhumvit. Bangkok’s biggest fresh market, a 72-hectare forest park and the national convention center all sit within a few MRT stops.

Most newcomers know this stretch as a few MRT stops on the way to Silom. Get off the train and you can jog around a lake before breakfast, then buy fish at a wholesale market on the walk home.

Port trucks and Rama IV traffic are the price.

The area is changing fast. The convention center reopened in 2022, new towers are rising at the Wireless Road end, and a plan to redevelop the port is on the table.

This guide covers where Khlong Toei starts and stops, what rent costs, where to eat and shop, how it floods, and who it suits.

Khlong Toei and Rama 4 cover Rama IV Road from Lumphini to the even-numbered Sukhumvit sois around Soi 22 to Soi 26, plus the lanes running south toward the port. Glass towers and low-rise shophouses share most of it.

The district is called Khlong Toei (คลองเตย). Older maps and signs also spell it Klong Toey or Khlong Toey.

The name means “pandan canal”, after the plant that once grew along the bank. Most of the canal was filled in for Rama IV Road in 1947.

  • Thai name: คลองเตย
  • Pronunciation: klawng TUHY
  • Main roads: Rama IV Road, Sukhumvit Soi 22 and Soi 26, New Ratchadaphisek Road and Kasem Rat Road
  • Stations: MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, MRT Khlong Toei and MRT Lumphini, with BTS Asok and BTS Phrom Phong just north

Big roads mark most of the edges:

  • North: Sukhumvit Road and the Asok interchange, with Soi 22 as the nearest link.
  • East: a blurry border with Phrom Phong, around Soi 24 and Soi 26.
  • South: the expressway, then Bangkok Port and the port-side communities.
  • West: Rama IV toward Lumphini Park, One Bangkok and Silom.

Our Phrom Phong guide picks up where the condo blocks around Sukhumvit Soi 24 end.

Pros and Cons of Living in Khlong Toei and Rama 4

Living in Khlong Toei gets you a train line, a 72-hectare park and Bangkok’s biggest fresh market for less than Asok or Phrom Phong. You pay for it in Rama IV traffic and early nights.

Pros

The big wins are green space and the train.

  • Park access: Benjakitti Forest Park sits beside the convention center, and there’s plenty of green space.
  • The MRT: three Blue Line stops, with Asok and Silom about 6 minutes away each.
  • Fresh food: Khlong Toei Market sells produce, meat and seafood at wholesale-market prices.
  • Lower street-level costs: older buildings and local food cost less than on Sukhumvit proper.
  • Offices nearby: The Parq, One Bangkok and the Silom end of Rama IV are a short ride away.
  • Low flood risk: the risk of a big flood here is very low.

Cons

Most of the downsides come from traffic. If truck noise bothers you, ask for a unit facing away from Rama IV.

  • Rama IV traffic: the road is wide and slow at rush hour, and crossing it on foot takes patience.
  • Port trucks: trucks heading to and from Bangkok Port use the nearby roads, and the transport minister has named them as a city traffic problem.
  • Thin nightlife: there are only a few bars, pubs and clubs here, and far more in Asok and Nana.
  • Few coworking spaces: most remote workers head to Asok.
  • Mixed streetscape: sidewalks are uneven in places, and new towers stand beside low-rise blocks and the market.
  • Construction: the Rama IV redevelopment means years of building noise and roadworks.

What Daily Life Looks Like in Khlong Toei and Rama 4

Daily life in Khlong Toei and Rama 4 runs on the MRT Blue Line and Benjakitti Forest Park, with laps of the lake before work and cheap food on the soi after it.

On a weekday, the park can be your alarm clock. The gates open at 4:30 AM, the walkers and runners get there first, and the Sukhumvit skyline sits behind the water.

Then it’s a motorbike taxi down the soi, about THB20 for the first kilometer, and onto the Blue Line. Asok and Silom are each about 6 minutes away.

Working from a laptop? The Parq’s WeWork floors sit beside the convention center station.

Lunch is a plate of rice near the office or a bowl of noodles from a stall by the market. Nothing fancy.

Evenings are quiet by Sukhumvit standards, and most nights you eat from the carts that set up on the soi at dusk. Want tablecloths? Phrom Phong is a few minutes’ ride away.

While you sleep, the market’s wholesale shift gets going, from about 10 or 11 PM until the early hours.

Saturday starts in Benjakitti. Walk the elevated path through the forest, then cross the 1.3 km Green Bridge to Lumphini Park if your legs agree.

Lunch at The Shed on Soi 26 is the easy weekend plan, with kitchens and bars under one roof. It’s listed as open Tuesday to Sunday, so Monday needs a different plan.

The market is the other weekend errand. Go in the morning, bring cash in small bills, wear closed shoes, and expect wet floors and trolleys.

Rainy season changes the plan fast. After a hard downpour, Soi 26 can pond for a while and Rama IV crawls, but the MRT keeps running underneath it all.

You pay for it in age. Expect a slower lift, dated plumbing and furniture, and a plainer pool and gym.

For a house at a saner price, our On Nut guide and Bang Na guide cover the options further out.

Budget Options

Budget rooms in older low-rise apartments around Khlong Toei start near THB9,000 a month. Don’t expect a gym or pool.

Khlong Toei sits in the upper price tier, so budget living here means an older building. For cheaper new condos, look further out along the BTS at Phra Khanong and On Nut.

For your first month, a serviced apartment or a short-term rental lets you test the area.

Before you commit to a longer lease, check what a rental contract should say.

Dining Out in Khlong Toei and Rama 4

Dining in Khlong Toei means plastic stools and market prices more often than tasting menus. There are hundreds of restaurants, cafes and food courts in the area, and the fancier places are a short ride away in Phrom Phong.

Street Food

Street food in Khlong Toei runs on the market’s clock. Stalls around Khlong Toei Market start early, feeding vendors and drivers noodles, rice dishes and grilled meat.

Further up the Sukhumvit sois, carts set up at dusk, so dinner is often something you pick up on the walk home from the MRT. Prices run lower than on Sukhumvit Road itself.

  • The Shed: a collective of kitchens and bars at 69 Sukhumvit Soi 26, running from Thai-style seafood to Mediterranean plates and fresh bakes, listed as open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 AM to 11 PM.
  • Central Park Parkside Market: a street-food and Michelin-food hub on the lower floor of Central Park at Silom and Rama IV, a few MRT stops west.

Our picks for the best restaurants in Bangkok go further.

Drinking in Khlong Toei and Rama 4

Khlong Toei is an early-night neighborhood, with only a few bars, pubs and clubs. On a Friday, most residents head to Asok or Phrom Phong and come home to a quiet soi.

The Shed on Soi 26 is the easy local option for a glass of wine without leaving the neighborhood. It closes at 11 PM and is listed as shut on Mondays, so call ahead before a Monday plan.

Living next door to the action is the real perk. Asok is about 6 minutes away by MRT, so you can go out on Sukhumvit and sleep on a quieter soi. The Blue Line stops at midnight, so a late one ends in a Grab.

Groceries in Khlong Toei and Rama 4

Groceries in Khlong Toei start with Bangkok’s biggest fresh market and end at a handful of big supermarkets within about a kilometer.

Fresh Markets

Khlong Toei Market at 1 Kasem Rat Road is Bangkok’s biggest fresh market, and Time Out lists it as open 24 hours. Chefs and street vendors shop here, so prices are low and nobody slows down for a browser.

Retail shoppers do best in the morning. The wholesale section works mainly from 10 or 11 PM into the early hours, according to a July 2026 Le Petit Journal piece.

Supermarkets

Supermarkets within about a kilometer of Khlong Toei cover both everyday shopping and imported food:

  • Big C, Lotus’s and Makro: everyday groceries and bulk buys.
  • Villa Market and Gourmet Market: imported food.

Hours vary by branch. Carrying bags down a long soi in rainy season gets old fast, and our Bangkok grocery delivery guide compares the apps.

Khlong Toei Market and the New Rama 4

Khlong Toei Market, Benjakitti Forest Park, the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center and One Bangkok all sit along the same few kilometers of Rama IV.

You can buy fish at 6 AM and walk past a brand-new tower by lunch.

Khlong Toei Market

Khlong Toei Market is Bangkok’s biggest fresh market, at 1 Kasem Rat Road near MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre and MRT Khlong Toei.

It’s a working wholesale and retail market built around chefs and vendors. Expect wet floors, trolleys and a noisy crowd.

Le Petit Journal found it in full swing at 11 PM in July 2026, with porters pushing loaded trolleys through the aisles and meat cut to order.

The Nation reported in 2025 that the market is busiest from 1 AM to 5 AM and again from 10 AM to 5 PM, when chefs and vendors stock up.

Tip: Bring cash and wear closed shoes. The floors stay wet.

Benjakitti Forest Park

Benjakitti Forest Park covers 72 hectares next to the convention center, and its forest section fully opened in 2022.

You get a lake, wetlands, cycle paths and an elevated walkway. Pedal boats and bikes are for hire.

The Green Bridge, a 1.3 km elevated path, links it to Lumphini Park. The park opens at 4:30 AM, but big events can bring temporary gate closures, so check Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) notices before you go.

Queen Sirikit National Convention Center

Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) reopened in September 2022 after a THB12 billion renovation. It hosts conferences, fairs and concerts, and the MRT station shares its name.

During big international meetings, expect slow roads nearby and limits on Benjakitti’s gates.

One Bangkok and Central Park

One Bangkok, at the Witthayu junction by Lumphini Park, sits just across the district line in Pathum Wan. It’s linked to MRT Lumphini by an underground tunnel and is opening in stages.

The official site lists Parade and The Storeys malls, The Ritz-Carlton Bangkok and Andaz One Bangkok. The Andaz opened on 19 December 2025.

The whole project isn’t due to finish until around 2030 or 2031, on Wikipedia’s estimate.

Further west, Central Park opened at Silom and Rama IV on 4 September 2025. It’s linked to BTS Sala Daeng and MRT Si Lom, and our upcoming Silom guide covers it.

The Port and the Community

Khlong Toei Port, also called Bangkok Port, sits south of the expressway, and tens of thousands of people live in the communities around it.

These communities are people’s homes, so walk through as you would any residential street, and ask before you photograph anyone.

Population figures vary. A 2006 estimate, cited by Wikipedia, put it at 80,000 to 100,000 people on land owned by the Port Authority of Thailand.

The transport minister’s 2026 housing plan covers more than 40,000 people in about 12,600 households.

In July and September 2026, the transport minister proposed ending cargo operations at the port and redeveloping the 2,353-rai site (about 376 hectares). The proposal includes:

  • new housing for the existing communities, on about 20% of the site
  • a casino-free entertainment complex
  • commercial space and a cruise terminal

Private investors would develop it under proposed 30- to 50-year concessions.

It’s still only a proposal. A final decision waits on a feasibility study, and nothing in the reports sets a construction date.

The plan would relocate 26 communities around the port. In early talks, residents raised no initial objection, on condition that they get replacement housing and the move happens in stages.

If you rent nearby, the redevelopment matters more for the long-term shape of the area than for your next lease.

Transportation Options for Khlong Toei and Rama 4

The MRT Blue Line runs under Rama IV with three stops in the area, so most people here get by without a car. Our transportation guide covers cards, passes and fares.

MRT

The MRT Blue Line stops at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, Khlong Toei and Lumphini. Sukhumvit is one stop north of the convention center, and Si Lom is one stop past Lumphini.

The Blue Line runs daily from 6:00 AM to midnight. (Verified October 2026.)

Single trips cost roughly THB17 to THB44. Asok and Silom are each about 6 minutes away.

BTS

The nearest BTS stations are Asok and Phrom Phong, just north of the area. Soi 22 is closer to Asok, and Soi 26 is nearer Phrom Phong.

A motorbike taxi covers the gap. Single BTS trips run roughly THB17 to THB65, and Siam is about 17 minutes away.

The Airport Rail Link to Suvarnabhumi starts at Makkasan, a short walk from MRT Phetchaburi. From Khlong Toei that’s three Blue Line stops plus the walk.

The trip takes about 32 minutes to Suvarnabhumi and about 54 to Don Mueang. Our airport transfer guide compares the other options.

Motorbike Taxis

Motorbike taxis cost about THB20 for the first kilometer, and they’re the quickest way down a long soi to the station. Wear the helmet, and agree the price first where none is posted.

Taxis and Grab

Metered taxis start at about THB35, and Grab works well. At 6 PM on a weekday, though, Rama IV crawls, and the train usually wins.

Buses and Boats

Buses serve Rama IV and Sukhumvit, but traffic makes them slower than the MRT. There’s no commuter boat in the neighborhood.

The nearest boats are the Khlong Saen Saep canal boats along Phetchaburi Road to the north.

Flooding in Khlong Toei and Rama 4

Khlong Toei and Rama 4 have a very low risk of a big flood. The area saw only brief flooding by the river in 2011 and stayed dry in September 2026.

Heavy rain is a different story. Sukhumvit Soi 26 and the stretch of Rama IV between Sukhumvit and Kasem Rat still flood in big storms, and the fixes there are only partly done.

The even-numbered Sukhumvit sois on this side stay drier than the odd-numbered side across the road. A few spots near the river and the port can also flood at high tide.

Big floods aren’t a worry here, but check the street outside any building after a heavy downpour.

Our guide to Bangkok’s flood-free neighborhoods has district-by-district ratings.

Healthcare in Khlong Toei and Rama 4

MedPark Hospital is on Rama IV Road, about half a kilometer from the center of Khlong Toei. Samitivej Sukhumvit and Bumrungrad are a short ride north.

Our private hospitals guide compares the options.

Hospitals

Two private hospitals sit on Rama IV itself, and a third is a short ride north.

Kluaynamthai Hospital and Sukhumvit Hospital are also close by.

Clinics

Walk-in care in Khlong Toei mostly means the big hospitals’ outpatient departments. For something minor, try a pharmacy first. Many everyday medicines are sold over the counter.

Dentists

Vimut-Theptarin lists a dental center on its website. Our Bangkok dentist guide covers the wider options.

Veterinarians

Vets are scarce in the area. Our Bangkok veterinarian guide lists 24-hour options and pet taxis.

International Schools in Khlong Toei and Rama 4

Dozens of international schools are within 5 km of Khlong Toei. Our international schools guide compares fees and curricula.

Parks in Khlong Toei and Rama 4

Benjakitti Forest Park is the reason many people choose Khlong Toei. It has far more green space than Asok or Phrom Phong.

Early mornings belong to the walkers and runners, and going before 7 AM beats the worst of the heat. The 72-hectare park has paths for running and cycling, plus an elevated walkway through the forest section.

Lumphini Park is one MRT stop west, or a walk across the Green Bridge. For more green space, see our guide to the best parks in Bangkok.

Other Standout Venues and Features

Beyond the market and the park, Khlong Toei’s other draws are a coworking floor by the convention center and the Phrom Phong malls a short ride north.

  • The Parq by WeWork: coworking on the 7th and 8th floors of The Parq building, on Ratchadaphisek Road next to the convention center station.
  • Emporium, EmQuartier and EmSphere: the Phrom Phong malls just north, listed under Khlong Toei district.
  • Queen Sirikit National Convention Center: trade fairs, concerts and fan meetings through the year.

If you need an office rather than a desk, our guide to renting an office in Bangkok covers the options.

  • Park lovers and retirees: Benjakitti is next door, and MedPark is about half a kilometer away.
  • Nomads: The Parq has coworking, but the cafes and bars are mostly in Asok.
  • Families: international schools are within reach, but port trucks and Rama IV traffic push many families toward Phrom Phong.
