Muang Thai Insurance Review: Is It Good for Expats in Thailand?

Muang Thai Insurance is one of Thailand’s five biggest non-life insurers, and I used its car insurance myself and made three claims that were all handled well. Its health insurance costs less than an international plan, but it pays only THB100,000 a year toward chemotherapy, which is too little for most expats.

Muang Thai Insurance traces its roots back to 1932 and sells car, health, accident, travel, home and business insurance. Most of its customers are Thai, but its car insurance works just as well for a foreigner with a Thai-registered car.

I’ve used Muang Thai Insurance for my own car, so the car section below includes my claims, how fast the agents arrived and what a garage owner told me about them.

This review covers both products foreigners ask about: what Muang Thai’s car insurance covers and costs, how claims work, what its Health ME Plus plan pays and costs, and which alternatives fit better if it doesn’t suit you.

Key Takeaways

  • This review covers Muang Thai Insurance, the non-life insurer with the blue logo, not Muang Thai Life Assurance.
  • Muang Thai Insurance is one of the biggest car insurers in Thailand and sells every type from compulsory cover to Type 1, plus a Type 1 plan for electric cars.
  • Its car insurance limits are similar to other insurers, but customer support and claims are excellent in my experience.
  • In our 2024 quotes, its car insurance cost less than Viriyah and Bangkok Insurance.
  • Not every garage accepts Muang Thai claims, so check with yours before you buy.
  • Its Health ME Plus plan pays up to THB10 million per hospital stay, but chemotherapy and radiotherapy are each capped at THB100,000 a year.
  • For health cover, most expats get a better deal from an international plan or an expat-focused Thai plan.

Muang Thai Insurance at a Glance

Muang Thai Insurance is a good pick for car insurance if your preferred garage accepts it, and a weak pick for expat health insurance.

Which Muang Thai Is This?

This review covers Muang Thai Insurance, the company with the blue logo that sells car, health and property insurance, not Muang Thai Life Assurance, a separate company with a pink logo that mainly sells life insurance.

Muang Thai Insurance logo
This is the Muang Thai Insurance logo. It’s the blue logo of the insurer this review covers, so you can tell it apart from the pink Muang Thai Life Assurance.

Fun fact: Muang Thai Insurance’s CEO is Madam Pang (Nualphan Lamsam), who has also been president of the Football Association of Thailand since February 2024.

Is Muang Thai Insurance Reliable?

Muang Thai Insurance is a long-established, licensed insurer whose history goes back to 1932, and it describes itself as the fifth-largest non-life insurer in Thailand. (Verified October 2026.)

The current company formed in 2008, when Phatra Insurance merged with the original Muang Thai Insurance. It’s a public company with a head office on Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok, and I’d expect it to be around for many years to come.

Car Insurance

Muang Thai Insurance sells every kind of car insurance in Thailand, from the compulsory policy (from THB645.21 a year online) through Type 3, 3+, 2+ and Type 1, including a Type 1 plan for electric cars. (Verified October 2026.)

The compulsory policy, known as Por Ror Bor, has the same cover and a fixed price at every insurer. Everything else is voluntary insurance you add on top, and Muang Thai has several versions of each type.

Muang Thai Car Insurance Plans

Muang Thai’s voluntary car insurance starts at THB4,900 a year for its cheapest 3+ plan, according to its own product pages. (Verified October 2026.) Your actual price depends on the car, its age and where you live:

Muang Thai also has a low-mileage Type 1 plan that it says saves up to 65% if you rarely drive, and several garage-repair Type 1 plans for older cars.

When we first reviewed Muang Thai in 2024, you could choose a deductible (the amount you pay yourself on each claim) from THB1,000 to THB5,000 to lower the price. We haven’t re-checked the current deductible options, so ask when you get a quote.

This is the tree that fell next to my car in Bangkok. It’s one of three claims I made with Muang Thai Insurance, and all three were handled well.

Car Insurance Coverage

Muang Thai’s standard Type 1 policy for a 7-seat car pays up to THB1,000,000 per person for injury or death to other people, and covers your own car up to the amount you insure it for. (Verified October 2026.)

CoverLimit
Injury or death to other peopleTHB1,000,000 per person, THB10,000,000 per accident
Damage to other people’s propertyTHB5,000,000 per accident
Your own car (crash, fire, theft)Up to the car’s insured value
Personal accident, driver and passengersTHB100,000 per person

Bail bondTHB300,000 per accident
Muang Thai Insurance Type 1 car insurance limits (code 110, sedan or 4-door pickup). (Verified October 2026.)

Because the car insurance market is so competitive, cover is very similar from company to company. What changes most is the type of policy you pick, and the price.

Claim Procedure

Muang Thai sent an agent to me within 15 minutes, late at night, the first time I needed to claim. I made three claims in total:

  • First accident: someone hit my car on Ratchada Road at around 10 pm.
  • Second accident: a tree suddenly fell and almost hit my car at 6 am.
  • Third accident: I accidentally hit an iron pole in a department store car park at around 2 pm.

For the first accident, the agent dealt with the other driver professionally and filled in my claim form for me.

The second claim went the same way. The agent came to the scene quickly, even though it was early in the morning, and handled everything.

The third was different, because nobody else was involved. They asked me to add their LINE account and send photos of the damage, then sent me a claim form online that I used to get the car fixed later.

Based on my experience, Muang Thai Insurance handles claims professionally, and I’m very happy with their service.

Partner Garages

Muang Thai Insurance lists more than 1,700 partner garages, glass shops and repair shops across Thailand in its online garage finder. (Verified October 2026.)

Partnered garage for Muang Thai Insurance
This is one of Muang Thai Insurance’s partner garages. It’s one of many across Thailand where you can get a covered repair done.

Not every garage accepts Muang Thai claims, though. If you have a garage in mind, check with them in advance that they take Muang Thai Insurance.

From what I gather, the network isn’t as large as Viriyah Insurance, which most garages accept.

Car Insurance Customer Support

Muang Thai Insurance’s call center is 1484, open 24 hours a day. Press 1 to report an accident. (Verified October 2026.)

In my experience, English support isn’t always available, especially late at night or early in the morning. If nobody English-speaking is free, they call you back as soon as they can.

Should I Buy Car Insurance from Muang Thai Insurance?

Muang Thai is a good choice for car insurance if the garage you plan to use accepts its claims. I’ve always had good experiences with its support and claims, and the premium was cheaper than Viriyah or Bangkok Insurance when we compared.

I also asked the owner of the garage that fixed my car what he thought of Muang Thai Insurance. He said it was a good company that approved claims quickly.

My only complaint is the garage network. It covers the whole country, but not every garage accepts Muang Thai claims.

How Much Does Muang Thai Insurance Car Insurance Cost?

Muang Thai’s Type 1 cost THB14,501 a year in our CheckDi comparison, less than Viriyah or Dhipaya, with lower personal accident and medical cover. Its Type 3+ cost THB4,900, the joint second-cheapest of 29 Type 3+ plans and the same as the starting price of its 3+ Surprise plan on its own website. (Verified October 2026.)

We ran live quotes on CheckDi for a 2023 Toyota Yaris Ativ 1.2 sedan registered in Bangkok and insured for THB350,000, with garage repair and no deductible. This is how the Type 1 plans compared:

Chubb was the cheapest of the four with the same THB5,000,000 cover for other people’s property. Viriyah and Dhipaya cost THB3,500 to THB4,250 more than Muang Thai, but pay twice as much for injuries to other people and more for personal accident and medical bills.

A deductible, the amount you pay yourself on each claim, brings the price down. AXA quoted THB10,700 for the same THB350,000 cover with a THB3,000 deductible. The cheapest Type 1 overall was THB9,100 from Indara, but that plan only covers your own car up to THB100,000.

For cheaper types of cover on the same car, these were the yearly prices across all insurers on CheckDi:

The value of your car changes the Type 1 price the most. For a 2018 Honda City insured for THB210,000, the cheapest Type 1 garage-repair quote was THB5,900, from Dhipaya.

When we compared quotes in 2024, Muang Thai also sat in the middle of the price range: more expensive than Roojai and Dhipaya, but cheaper than Viriyah and Bangkok Insurance.

Your own price depends on your car’s model, age, value and province, so the quickest way to check is to run a quote. Health Insurance

Muang Thai Insurance’s main health plan, Health ME Plus, pays up to THB1 million, THB3 million, THB5 million or THB10 million per hospital stay, depending on which of its four plans you choose. (Verified October 2026.)

The plans are built mainly for Thais, but they can interest expats in Thailand who want a cheaper local plan. Like most Thai plans, they cover treatment in Thailand only.

Plans and Coverage

Health ME Plus Plan 4 costs THB45,813 a year at age 41-45 and pays up to THB10 million per hospital stay, with a room limit of THB15,000 a night. (Verified October 2026.)

Plans 2 to 4 can take a deductible of THB20,000, THB40,000 or THB80,000 per hospital stay, which cuts the price sharply. At age 41-45, Plan 4 drops from THB45,813 to THB11,926 a year with the THB80,000 deductible.

You can add outpatient cover for doctor visits without a hospital stay, for one visit a day and up to 30 visits a year. (Verified October 2026.)

There’s also a critical illness add-on that pays a lump sum of THB50,000 to THB500,000 if you’re diagnosed with cancer, a heart attack, a stroke or another listed illness.

Partner Hospitals

Muang Thai Insurance’s online hospital list has more than 900 hospitals and clinics across Thailand, and at many of them you don’t pay upfront for a hospital stay. (Verified October 2026.)

When we first wrote this review in 2024, its partners included these well-known private hospitals:

  • Bangkok: Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej (Sukhumvit and Srinakarin), BNH, Bangkok Christian and Thai Nakarin.
  • Chiang Mai: Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai Medical Center and Chiangmai Ram.
  • Phuket: Bangkok Hospital Phuket and Mission Hospital Phuket.

Check the hospital finder on Muang Thai’s website for your local hospital before you buy, because the list changes.

Health Insurance Claim Procedure

To claim with Muang Thai health insurance, show your Muang Thai card at a partner hospital and Muang Thai pays the hospital directly. You pay only the amount above your plan’s limits.

Health Insurance Customer Support

Muang Thai’s health insurance uses the same 24-hour 1484 hotline as its car insurance; press 2 to report other events or 4 for other insurance questions.

Should You Buy Health Insurance from Muang Thai Insurance?

Muang Thai’s Health ME Plus is affordable, but its cancer cover is too low for most expats. Even on Plan 4, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are each capped at THB100,000 a year.

There’s a good discussion in a Thai cancer Facebook group about how much cancer cover you need. Many members said early-stage cancer treatment at a private hospital in Thailand cost THB2 million to THB3 million.

For people in the final stages who were treated at a premium hospital, the cost was around THB35 million.

In my opinion, expats usually get a better deal from international health insurance. It costs a bit more, but the cover is much better.

For example, Cigna Healthcare‘s starting Silver plan has a US$1,000,000 yearly limit with cancer care included, and it can cover your home country as well as Thailand.

Another option is a local plan from Luma Health, which is built for expats and costs less than an international plan.

Other Products

Besides car and health insurance, Muang Thai Insurance sells these mainly to Thai customers:

  • Personal accident insurance
  • Travel insurance, mainly for Thais travelling abroad
  • Home and property insurance
  • Business insurance
  • Pet insurance

I don’t review them here, since they’re aimed at Thai citizens.

Disadvantages

Muang Thai Insurance’s weak points for foreigners:

  • Not every garage accepts Muang Thai claims, and the network is smaller than Viriyah’s.
  • English support on the 1484 hotline isn’t always available at night.
  • Health ME Plus caps chemotherapy and radiotherapy at THB100,000 a year each, on every plan.
  • Its health plans cover Thailand only.
  • Most product pages and documents are in Thai.

Should I Get It?

Muang Thai Insurance is worth getting for car insurance if your garage accepts it: its claims service is fast, and its prices were mid-range when we compared. Of all the types of insurance in Thailand it sells, car insurance is the one I’d recommend.

For health insurance, there are better options for expats in Thailand. Before you buy car insurance, compare prices with other insurers on CheckDi.

FAQ

Muang Thai Insurance answers most questions on its 24-hour hotline, 1484.

No. Muang Thai Insurance (blue logo) sells car, health and property insurance. Muang Thai Life Assurance (pink logo) is a separate company that mainly sells life insurance.

Yes. Car insurance is tied to the car, so a car registered in Thailand can be insured whatever your nationality. You can compare Muang Thai’s prices with other insurers on CheckDi.

What number do I call after a car accident?

Call 1484 and press 1 to report an accident. The line is open 24 hours, and Muang Thai sends an agent to the scene.

Yes, but with low limits. Surgery and hospital stays for cancer fall under the normal per-stay limit, while chemotherapy and radiotherapy are each capped at THB100,000 a year on every Health ME Plus plan.
