English teaching is undoubtedly one of the most popular jobs for expats in Thailand.
However, not all teaching jobs are the same. The most sought-after teaching jobs are those at international schools.
Those are the highest paid teaching jobs, that come with benefits such as flight tickets, accommondation fees, traveling expenses, and relocation assistants.
Because of this, competition is also high as well. Not everyone can apply for those jobs. And you can’t find them on general teaching job websites like ajarn.com.
In this article, we will guide you through everything you need to know in order to get a teaching job at leading international schools in Thailand, including qualifications, the best time to look for a position, and where to look.
Qualifications
You may have heard before that TEFL is important in getting a teaching job in Thailand.
While that might be true for other types of teaching jobs, it’s not usually required for teaching positions at leading international schools.
Instead of TEFL, leading international schools in Thailand usually ask for a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Some may also ask for a certificate like PGCE or EAL.
A few years of teaching experience with English language learners is usually required as well.
The last requirements are the full knowledge of the school curriculum (eg. British, IB, American, Australian).
Where to Look for
Instead of going to a generic teaching job website such as ajarn.com or jobsdb.com, you should directly go to the school website.
Generic teaching job websites in Thailand mostly have teaching jobs at language centers and normal schools.
If you aim for leading international schools, you should head for their websites directly and apply through their job portals.
Below is a list of international schools in Thailand posting jobs ads on their websites categorized by curriculum.

In addition to school websites, you can go to international teaching job websites such as tes.com (for British Curriculum) and tieonline.com (for American Curriculum). Many leading international schools, including Bangkok Patana, post their job ads over there.
Apply from Outside of Thailand
In contrast to popular belief, you should apply for teaching jobs at international schools from outside of Thailand.
If you apply from within Thailand, you will be considered a local hire, which means a much lower salary.
In addition, when applying from outside of Thailand, the position will come as a package. In addition to salary, the school will also pay for your flight ticket, relocation service, and accommodation fees.
What Salary Can You Expect
Leading international schools in Thailand, such as Shrewsbury, Harrow, Bangkok Patana, ISB, and the Reguest pay 100,000 baht or even over 200,000 baht a month as a salary.
Salaries for middle-tier schools such as KIS are going to be around 70,000 baht to 85,000 baht.
When to Apply
You should look for a teaching job from November onwards. That’s when the school finishes renewing contracts with current teachers and knows the positions that they need filled.
You should act quickly since positions are usually filled quickly as well.
After that, more positions will open up again in January and February. There might be only a few positions left after March.
