Private Hospitals in Hua Hin: Costs, Insurance, and How to Choose

Hua Hin has two private hospitals with English-speaking staff and a busy government hospital, all on the same main road. This guide shows you which one to pick, roughly what it’ll cost and what to expect when you get there.

Hua Hin is a popular place to retire, so sooner or later most people living here need a hospital. The choice is simpler than in Bangkok or Phuket: Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin for serious problems, San Paulo for everyday care at a lower price, and Hua Hin Hospital if you want the public system.

Which one is right comes down to how serious the problem is, whether you have insurance and how much waiting you can put up with. We’ll walk you through each of them, what readers liked and what annoyed them, so you know where to go before you need to.

Key Takeaways

  • Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin is the best-equipped hospital in town and the one to choose for heart, brain, cancer and serious injury care. It’s also the most expensive.
  • San Paulo Hua-Hin Hospital is the cheaper private option for everyday problems and check-ups, and its international team speaks English and German.
  • Hua Hin Hospital is the government hospital. It costs far less, but mornings are very busy and the staff speak little English.
  • For an ambulance anywhere in Thailand, call 1669. Save your chosen hospital’s emergency number too.
  • Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin bills 38 international insurers directly. Call its insurance team before a planned visit to check yours.
  • Even with an appointment, expect to wait at the private hospitals, so bring a book.

Treatment Quality

Hua Hin’s private hospitals give good care for a town of its size. Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin in particular has full scanning equipment and specialists in most fields, and it’s strongest for heart, brain and cancer care.

Our own writer has used Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin for five years, from skin rashes to CT scans, and has been happy with the care. English is spoken from the front desk to the specialist. The one thing she’d change is how much the doctors explain. She hasn’t always understood why they chose a test or whether there were other options. Her advice, and ours, is to ask, and to bring a Thai-speaking friend for anything complicated.

The honest limit is that Hua Hin isn’t Bangkok. For major surgery or rare specialist care, your doctor may send you to the capital, which is a few hours’ drive away. For everything else, you don’t need to leave town.

How Much Hua Hin Hospitals Cost

Prices depend far more on which hospital you pick than on the treatment, so we’ve given each one a rating instead of a price list. One $ is the cheapest in Hua Hin and $$$$$ is the most expensive.

  • Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin: $$$$$
  • San Paulo Hua-Hin Hospital: $$$
  • Hua Hin Hospital (public): $

The gap is real. Our writer paid three times as much for an ultrasound and a doctor’s visit at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin as she did for the same thing at San Paulo. She found Bangkok Hospital’s prices roughly 20% to 70% higher than the public hospitals overall.

Our writer kept her bills from Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, so the table below mixes those with prices San Paulo publishes online.

Some of these bills go back a few years, so today’s prices may be a little higher.

Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin and Hua Hin Hospital don’t publish doctor fees, and San Paulo publishes prices only for check-up packages and a few tests. So ask for a written estimate before any scan or admission. Medicine is the other place bills grow, because hospital pharmacies charge more than shops in town. For a long course of a common medicine, ask for the drug name and check a local pharmacy.

The Best Private Hospitals in Hua Hin

Hua Hin has two private hospitals worth knowing, a few minutes apart on Phetchakasem Road.

Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin ($$$$$)

Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin opened in 2011 and is part of the Bangkok Hospital group, which runs dozens of hospitals across Thailand. It has 64 beds, and it covers heart, brain, bones and joints, stomach and liver, women’s health, children, eyes, dental and dialysis.

It’s the one we’d choose for anything serious. Long-time residents agree. If something goes badly wrong, this is the hospital that can stabilise you and move you to Bangkok. The rooms are private, clean and quiet, the nurses are responsive, and English is spoken throughout.

The downsides are price and waiting. It’s the most expensive hospital in town by a wide margin, and appointments rarely start on time. If you’re paying yourself, we’d use San Paulo for routine problems and come here for the big ones.

Good:

  • Best equipment and specialists in Hua Hin, especially for heart, brain and cancer care
  • English spoken at every desk
  • Direct billing with 38 international insurers

Not so good:

  • The most expensive hospital in town
  • Long waits, even with an appointment
  • Doctors don’t always explain the options unless you ask

San Paulo Hua-Hin Hospital ($$$)

San Paulo Hua-Hin Hospital is the smaller private hospital, accredited by Thailand’s hospital standards body. It has a 24-hour emergency department, an ICU, dialysis and the usual departments, from general medicine to bones, heart and children.

Its biggest selling point is price. Readers find it noticeably cheaper than Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, and it’s one of the few hospitals in town that publishes prices for check-ups and screenings. Its International Service Center speaks English, German and Filipino and can help you with an insurance claim, which makes life easier if Thai isn’t your language.

The trade-off is that its facilities don’t match Bangkok Hospital’s, and older forum reports on its service are mixed. For routine care and check-ups, it’s good value. For a complex problem, we’d still go to Bangkok Hospital.

Good:

  • Much cheaper than Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin
  • Published prices for check-ups and screenings
  • International team in English and German

Not so good:

  • Fewer specialists and less equipment
  • Ask your insurer before you go, as it doesn’t list its insurers online

The Public Hospital: Hua Hin Hospital

Hua Hin Hospital is the government hospital, which residents describe as the biggest between Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. Readers who’ve used it say the care is good, and it costs a fraction of the private hospitals.

It gets very busy in the mornings, and residents’ advice is to arrive before 08:00, or after 13:00 if you want a parking space. The website is in Thai and there’s no foreign-patient desk, so bring a Thai speaker if you can.

If you’re admitted and want a private room, there are rules. The doctor has to approve it, rooms go to patients in queue order so you can’t book ahead, and a relative has to stay with you around the clock. Residents have moved here from a private hospital after surgery to cut the cost of recovery, an option if your insurance is limited. The tips for public hospital appointments explain how the system works.

Making an Appointment

You can book by phone, email or the hospital’s website, or just walk in. Both private hospitals are on Phetchakasem Road in the centre of town, and so is the public hospital.

Plan for a wait. At Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, our writer says to expect at least an hour even with an appointment, and she once waited two hours for a same-day visit while quite ill. That’s normal here, so book the first slot of the morning if you can.

Emergencies and Outpatient Care

For anything that can wait a day, book a normal outpatient visit. For chest pain, a bad accident, trouble breathing or heavy bleeding, go to the emergency room (ER).

For an ambulance, call 1669. It’s Thailand’s free national emergency medical number. You can also call a hospital directly: Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin’s Trauma and Emergency Center is on +66 32 616 888, and San Paulo’s 24-hour emergency department is on +66 32 532 576, extension 107 or 108.

For a serious emergency, we’d go to Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin. It has 12 intensive-care beds, its own ambulances and the connections to move you to a bigger hospital if needed. At any private ER, staff treat you first and sort out payment while you’re being looked after, so bring your passport and insurance card if you can.

Using Insurance at a Hua Hin Hospital

Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin is the easy choice if you have international insurance. It lists 38 insurers it bills directly, including Cigna, Aetna, Allianz and GeoBlue, and its international insurance team on +66 32 616 854 will confirm whether your policy is covered.

When it works, you show your card and the hospital deals with your insurer. But for expensive tests, expect some paperwork. Our writer had to sign a form agreeing to pay for a CT scan herself if her insurer said no, and waiting for that answer was nerve-racking. If that happens to you, ask the insurance desk how long approval usually takes before you agree.

San Paulo says it works with various overseas insurers, and its international team helps you file a claim. If your insurer has no deal with the hospital, you pay first and claim back later, so keep the itemised bill and the medical report. If you’re still choosing a plan, the health insurance in Thailand guide compares the main types.

Tips for Visiting Hospitals in Hua Hin

  • Bring your passport and your insurance card, or a photo of both.
  • Bring a list of your medicines and doses, and recent test results on your phone or a USB stick.
  • Book the first appointment of the morning to cut the wait.
  • Carry a card or cash for deposits and excess. Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin’s cashier takes cash, cards and Thai QR payments.
  • Bring a Thai-speaking friend for anything complicated, even at the private hospitals.
  • Ask before every test: why it’s needed, what it costs and whether your insurance covers it.

Serious Cases and Transfers to Bangkok

If something is serious, start at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin. It has ground ambulances ready 24 hours and transfers critical patients to other hospitals in the Bangkok Hospital group.

San Paulo also stabilises emergency patients and moves them on when they need more. Either way, the emergency doctor decides whether you’re treated in Hua Hin or moved, so follow that advice and call your insurer early. Medical transfers are expensive, so check now whether your policy covers them.
