Recommended Thai Embassies Near Thailand to Apply for Visas

Each Thai embassy is different when it comes to issuing visas. Different embassies have different procedures to approve your visa. Some embassies might require different documents than others.

In this guide, you’ll find out which Thai embassies near Thailand you can consider when applying for visas.

Good to Know

Please note that many Thai embassies and consulates now use the E-Visa system. This means you should usually visit the website, create an account, select the embassy or consulate for the country where you are applying from, and submit your application there. Processing times and document requirements are set by each embassy or consulate and can change, so check the official website before arranging travel. The processing times for E-Visas commonly listed by nearby offices are below:

  • Hanoi (Embassy): 5 business days
  • Ho Chi Minh City (Consulate General): 5 business days
  • Kuala Lumpur (Embassy): 7 days
  • Penang (Consulate General): 5–7 business days
  • Phnom Penh (Embassy): 10 business days
  • Vientiane (Embassy): 10–15 business days
  • Savannakhet (Consulate General): 10–15 business days
  • Jakarta (Embassy): 10 business days

Malaysia

When applying for a Non-immigrant B Visa at the Kuala Lumpur Thai embassy, it’s usually painless if you have all required documents ready. Applications are now generally handled through the Thai E-Visa system rather than by a quick in-person submission, but you may have dissimilar experiences.

Because applications are submitted online, you should prepare clear scans or photos of the required documents before applying. Check the embassy’s latest instructions because requirements can differ by visa type.

Applying for a visa in Penang can be a pain-free experience, provided you have the documents, which may include proof of onward travel and proof of a hotel booking depending on your visa type. There are agencies in Georgetown that can help you apply for a fee, but check the consulate’s latest E-Visa instructions before using one.

Singapore

The Royal Thai Embassy in Singapore is known for being fast and efficient. However, visa applications are now handled through the Thai E-Visa system, so do not rely on next-afternoon passport pickup. Check the current processing time before making travel plans.

The main drawback of the Royal Thai Embassy in Singapore is their strictness. You may need to show copies of your airline tickets and proof of onward travel, which may need to be an airline ticket depending on your visa type.

Always be polite here, and your visa will be processed smoothly if your documents meet the embassy’s requirements.

Laos

Vientiane is a popular choice among foreigners applying for a visa as the Thai embassy in Vientiane is quite accommodating. It’s also one of the closest Thai embassies for many people traveling from Thailand.

There are several border crossings between Thailand and Laos, with the Nong Khai-Vientiane border being the most popular.

Thai visa service companies still have scheduled trips to the Nong Khai-Vientiane border, which is an eight- to nine-hour van ride from Bangkok. However, because Thai E-Visa applications are submitted online, confirm what the service includes before booking.

Not as popular as the Vientiane Thai embassy, the Savannakhet Thai Consulate is another choice to apply for visas. Check its current E-Visa processing time and document requirements before traveling.

Cambodia

Although most expats in Thailand prefer to go to Vientiane in Laos, the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh is a serviceable alternative. Under the E-Visa system, processing can take around 10 business days, so plan around the embassy’s current published timeline.

Thai embassy in Phnom Penh also often asks for proof of funds, proof of onward travel, and proof of a hotel booking.

Philippines

Unlike the other embassies, the Royal Thai Embassy in Manila is not a common choice for visa runs from Thailand. It’s also a three-hour flight from Bangkok and not an ideal place to apply for a Thai visa unless you’re there. Check the Thai E-Visa system or embassy website for current procedures before applying.

Some of the less popular places for doing Thai visa runs include Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; Yangon, Myanmar; Hong Kong; and Jakarta, Indonesia.

You may need similar basic documents for Thai embassies and consulates in these countries, but each office can require different supporting documents. These options are worth considering if money isn’t an issue. This list of Thai visa run choices provides a rough estimate on visa run costs.
