How to Get the Most from Your Shipping Insurance

Buying shipping insurance is totally optional. Normally, the shipping company will have a contract with different insurance providers and can get it for you if needed. Some shipping companies might also provide this service themselves.

The cost and coverage of shipping insurance vary by insurer, shipping company, destination, shipment type, declared value, and policy terms.

For example, if the total declared value of your belongings is THB200,000, ask the insurer or shipping company for written confirmation of the premium, maximum payout, deductible, and exclusions before paying.

If you decide to buy the insurance, it’s important to pack your belongings well with bubble wrap, packing paper, and tape. Otherwise, when damage occurs, the insurance company might claim that the cause of the damage is from poor packaging.

Damage from shipment can occur during loading and unloading your belongings. If the shipping company has a good reputation during this process, you might not need to buy the insurance.

However, note that accidents can still happen during shipping because of uncontrollable factors such as storms.
