Best Place to Exchange Money in Thailand

Thailand has several money exchange services that offer far better rates than airport counters or ATMs. This guide covers the best options in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.

Normally, you can do it by bringing your cash to Thailand and exchanging it for baht. But there are many exchange services here that charge exchange fees of up to ten times less than ATMs and banks.

Bangkok

Key Takeaways

  • Private money exchange services in Thailand typically charge far lower fees than ATMs or airport counters.
  • There are two separate Superrich companies in Thailand: Superrich Thailand (green) and Superrich 1945 (orange). They are not related.
  • The Superrich Thailand (green) headquarters on Ratchadamri Road in Bangkok offers the lowest fee of 0.06%, compared to 0.10% at other branches.
  • X-One money exchange in Silom consistently beats Superrich on rates and also offers free delivery.
  • Superrich Thailand has a branch at Suvarnabhumi Airport on the B floor, near the Airport Link entrance, useful for exchanging a small amount on arrival.
  • In Chiang Mai, multiple services near Tha Phae Gate and on Loi Kroh Road offer competitive rates, with no single clear winner.
  • If arriving in Phuket or Chiang Mai, exchange only a small amount at the airport and get a better rate once in the city.

Although many people may have heard before that Superrich gives you the best exchange rate in Thailand, little do they know that there are actually two official Superrich companies here: Superrich Thailand (in green) and Superrich 1945 (in orange). They are not the same company. The orange Superrich has a higher exchange rate.

Only the Superrich Thailand (in green) headquarters at Ratchadamri Road has the best exchange rate so far, charging only 0.06% exchange fees, while other branches charge 0.10%. For a broader overview of how currency exchange in Thailand works, including tips on timing and rates, see our dedicated guide.

One thing to note is that the Superrich Thailand headquarters is often full of customers. It may take you an hour or even longer. It’s better to walk to another nearby money exchange service, such as Grand Superrich (in blue, and no relation to the green or orange branches). It regularly offers the same exchange rate from dollars to baht as the Green Superrich, but has far fewer customers.

Of course, you are unable to go there directly after landing in Thailand without any baht in your pocket. Fortunately, Superrich Thailand has a branch in Suvarnabhumi Airport on the B floor. Since it’s located in front of the Airport Link entrance, if you follow the Airport Link sign, you’ll find it there with the other money exchange services. If you plan to send money to Thailand from abroad rather than carrying cash, see our guide on the best transfer options.

However, X-One money exchange in Silom has a better exchange rate than Superrich. If you are serious about getting the best rate, this is our recommended service. They also provide free delivery. If you regularly move money internationally, a Wise multi-currency account is worth comparing against local exchange services for regular transfers.

Other

In case your first stop is Phuket or Chiang Mai, you should exchange a small amount of money at the Phuket or Chiang Mai airport instead and exchange the remaining amount inside the city.

For Chiang Mai, there are many money exchange services around the Old Town, near Tha Phae Gate. Unlike Bangkok, there’s no absolute money exchange service with the best rate in Chiang Mai. Superrich Chiang Mai in Loi Kroh Road and Tha Phae Gate regularly offer the best rates. If you are planning a longer stay, our guide to opening a Thai bank account covers how to access better rates and lower fees on an ongoing basis.
