Finding a place to rent that allows pets can be challenging in Thailand. Not every landlord allows pets, even if you rent a house.
In this article, we will guide you through how to find accommodations that allow pets, including how to find a dog hotel for when you need to be away from your place.
First Things First
There are a few things you should keep in mind when looking for pet-friendly accommodations:
First, different places have different rules and regulations on pets. Even for condos that have the same builder, you might be able to have a small pet breed in one place, while the other might not allow it.
It depends more on the juristic people at each location.
Second, even at a pet-friendly place, there might be limits on how many pets you can bring. It’s best to check directly with the landlord or juristic person.
Third, you might see someone that has a pet in your apartment, but that doesn’t always mean that your apartment allows pets. Some people may illegally keep their pets there, especially if they are small cats or dogs.
Fourth, you should tell your landlord how many pets you want to bring with you, including their breeds and size.
Fifth, only a few condominiums in Thailand allow pets. A lot of them only allow small breeds. So if you bring more than one pet with you, or your pet is a larger breed, it’s likely that you will need to rent a house.
Sixth, some condominiums might allow pets, but the property owner might not allow it. In this case, you can try your luck by offering to pay a higher price for rent, such as 1,000 or 2,000 baht more per month.
How to Find Pet-Friendly Properties
There are mainly three ways you can find a pet-friendly property in Thailand:
- Online
- Community
- Real estate agent
Online
You can find apartments online that allow pets.
Amazingproperty.org and siamhomesource.com have useful pages listing all apartments and condominiums in Bangkok that allow pets.
Some property websites such as livinginsider.com and airbnb.com come with “pet allowed” filters. You should always enable it during your search.
Normally, this filter is hidden under “more”.
Although ddproperty and hipflat, the two biggest property portals in Thailand do not have this function on their sites, many listings state clearly that they do or do not allow pets.
You can find these type of listings through Google Search with the following keyword:
site:ddproperty.com + pet friendly + your preferred location OR
site:hipflat.co.th + pet friendly + your preferred location
Then, you should see all listings available that allow pets from these property sites.
If it’s a hotel, you can use either Agoda or booking.com.
You should not expect all of the properties shown in your search result to be pet-friendly, even with the pets-allowed filter enabled.
Some of them still might not allow pets since some property owners may unintentionally enable this option when listing their properties.
In addition, different properties have different regulations on how many pets you can bring with you. They also have different definitions on breed size. For example, when they say “a small breed”, it might mean only those tiny breeds like pomeranians and chihuahuas.
Therefore, you should contact property owners directly and give all details about your pets to make sure that they are allowed.
Community
Asking for recommendations from expat communities is another good way to find a pet-friendly property.
There’s are specific communities for this such as Pet Friendly Properties Bangkok. It’s a public Facebook group where you can start looking for a place for you and your pets right away.
If you want to find a tight-knit pet lover community, then check out Pet Sitting Bangkok. It’s a closed group with some strict regulations but is really useful.
You can literally ask anything there except to sell your pets.
Real Estate Agents
If you don’t want to do the search yourself, you can ask a real estate agent to find a pet-friendly property for you.
It’s normally free of charge in Thailand since real estate agents work on a commission basis. They normally get one month’s rent for a one-year rental from the property owner.
The bad part of using a real estate agent is that the price you get might be slightly higher than dealing with property owners directly. In addition, they might also have a limited list of properties that allow pets.
