How to Find a Good Teaching Job in Thailand

There are various types of teaching jobs in Thailand. You can teach online. You can do a private class. You can teach at corporations.

However, to get better pay, teaching at legitimate educational organisations, such as schools and universities, is the better choice.

Since they pay more, they are also more strict and have more requirements than normal schools.

How to Prepare Yourself

There are mainly two requirements in order to get a good teaching job in Thailand:

  • your educational background
  • work experience.

Another important point you should keep in mind: manner is an important issue in Thailand. You should stay calm and have good manners at all times.

You should remember that when you are a teacher, you not only teach, but you are also an example to students.

Educational Background

To be a teacher in Thailand, you should at least have a bachelor’s degree in a field related to the subject you want to teach.

However, sometimes you need more than that. If you want to teach at universities, you should have a master’s degree or even a PhD.

And having graduated from a recognised institute will give you more credit than an unknown institute.

If you want to teach English, it might be a good idea to get a CELTA certificate over a TEFL certificate. Some international schools and universities give more credit to CELTA.

In addition, if you are a native English speaker, chances are that you will have a higher salary than a non-native speaker.

Working Experience

You also need to have teaching experience in order to get a good-paying job. You should have at least a few years of experience.

Teaching experience at a school is better than experience at corporations.

You can ask for a higher salary if you have experience in writing academic papers. When you teach in educational organisations in Thailand, teaching won’t be your only job. You may need to write these papers as well.

How Much Do You Make?

Salaries vary depending on your experience, position, and your workplace.

If you work at a low-end university or a school, the salary starts at 30,000 baht a month.  In the case of a high-end university or an international school, the salary can be more than 70,000.

You are able to make over 100,000 baht a month if you are an experienced teacher with a PhD and are able to publish academic papers. And it’s possible to make extra money from projects.

Although the salary amount might be lower than what you make back home, the lower cost of living makes up for it.

In the end, it is about how much you can save per month rather than how much you earn.

Do You Need to Speak Thai?

You don’t need to be able to speak Thai. But learning Thai is recommended.

It will help you significantly in dealing with administrational things, since you will need to communicate with Thai staff who sometimes have limited English skills.

It will also help you to better explain learning material to students in certain cases.

Where Can You Get a Good Teaching Job?

This is a good question. It’s not easy to get a good teaching job. But it might not be that hard either.

One thing that you should keep in mind is that Thai universities and schools tend to recruit through connections.

They may ask their teachers or only use the recruitment agencies that they know of.

This is why it can be difficult to find these jobs on normal job websites.

Searchassociates and ISS are good websites you can check. They are specialists when it comes to recruiting teachers for international schools across the world. They might even have a job fair in your location.

Jobs.ac.uk, a job website for academics, also post teaching jobs in Thailand once in a while.

In case you are already in Thailand, you should contact the dean, program director, or head of the department at schools or universities directly.

You should be able to find their contact details on the school/university website.
